COURSE PLAN This course is designed to emphasize problem solving, writing and oral communication skills that can be applied to a variety of academic and career environments after graduation from high school. The curriculum is designed to emphasize leadership and team building skills and to foster an interest in community action as well as concern for school-based, local, national and global issues. Students are expected to produce their best work on all assignments and to make positive contributions to classroom discussions and activities. In the Leadership course, students will reflect upon and develop their own leadership style and skills through individual research, writing, public speaking and multi-media presentations. They will also practice effective communication and teamwork skills through a variety of cooperative activities in the classroom setting. Students will research the lives and accomplishments and analyze the leadership styles of leaders and present their findings to the class. They will also investigate local, national and international issues in weekly current events reports, focusing on three particular issues of interest (one local, one national and one international) to investigate in depth. By the end of the term, each student will create a plan of action to address the problems raised by these issues. A variety of other readings, projects and activities will expose the students to a variety of leaders, leadership styles, community service projects and community action strategies that will serve as a model for students to take responsibility to help solve problems in the school and in the local community.
