General Information

"Tailgating" - What Is It Really?

Parents, grandpartents, coaches, players, teachers, family members, fans, and friends frequently gather after River Hill athletic events to have a "tailgate" party for the members of the team. We do this to show our support for the team athletically and to show them that we support them as individuals and students as well.

The colloquial term "tailgating" has several different meanings. At River Hill "tailgating" refers to partying from the trunk of your car at the parking lot of the game. Our parties are similar to the tailgate parties you find at a Ravens, Orioles, Steelers or Redskins game or at many colleges. (River Hill students that go to college will find that college students have refined tailgating into an art form!)

Everyone brings their own food (BYOF), some bring grills and cook hot dogs, hamburgers etc. It actually is just another form of picnic. However unlike tailgate parties at professional sporting events, there is absolutely no alcohol.

At River Hill, "tailgating" is a term that comes from the "good old days" when people drove station wagons. The back door of the car was called a tail gate. The window would roll down and the gate would drop open. People would set food on the tailgate and have a picnic in the parking lot, either before or after a sporting event. It still has the same name, but most folks have vans now. So to keep up with the times, we open the back doors and put the food in the rear storage area or set up a small folding table.

Traditional Tailgate

Modern Table Tailgate

Just to prevent any misunderstanding, there are two other meanings for the word "tailgating" that absolutely do not apply to River Hill tailgating parties:

Tailgating at River Hill is open to all, including the players and friends of the competing teams. Indeed, tailgating is a fine opportunity to help build stronger interschool relations. And, this is a fine opportunity for parents, friends, and supporters to show the Hawks teams a little appreciation for all the work they are doing.

Everyone is invited.

This explanation of what "tailgating" means at River Hill was compiled from a series of email messages between: Marisa Costagliola, "Wunder", Chris Haug, Dianne Mekelburg, Susan Clime, Alan V. Shackelford, and Allen Dyer.
