River Hill drops one to Hammond, 7-0

On May 4, which was a 2 PM Saturday makeup date for a rainout, the Hawks' bats went dead in a 7-0 home game loss to the Hammond Bears. Lately, the Hawks have not been able to get out of the first inning without giving up runs. This game continued that pattern. In the top of the first, with 1 out, Hammond's Adam Heffron singled. A base on balls and two more singles yielded 3 runs. In the next 4 innings, starter Kevin Marrie pitched great, giving up just one more run in the fifth. Kevin struck out 7 batters in five innings and gave up only 3 walks. Mike Anton, who pitched in the sixth and seventh, also looked good, striking out three. Hammond scored 3 times in the last inning off only 1 hit, a couple of walks and an error. Unfortunately, the Bears were able to manufacture 7 runs off only 4 hits during the course of the game.

Offensively, Hammond grounded the Hawks all game. Wes McCoy's two doubles, one high off the left field fence in the second inning, and the second in the seventh inning, led the limited River Hill attack. Ben Trapuzzano also doubled in the third inning. The Hawks left 5 runners stranded on base as offensively, they just couldn't get their offense into gear. Some balls are being hit hard, but all too often, right at somebody. With the pitching coming on stronger of late, and the batting bound to come out of its collective slump, the end of the regular season and the playoffs could end on a rebound for the Hawks.
