Hawks fly higher than Eagles

The River Hill Hawks defeated a solid Centennial team, 9-4, on a sunny April 10 at home. The visiting Eagles, ranked fourth in the Baltimore Sun, jumped out to a one run lead in the first on a couple of walks, followed by a double. Hawks' starter Mike Anton worked his way out of the inning with his second strikeout. The Hawks evened things in the bottom of the second when Wes McCoy was hit by a pitch, reached third on a hit-and-run single by Steve Cornelius, and scored on a wild pitch.

Centennial came back with two runs in the third and one in the fourth. Mike Anton pitched through the fifth, striking out 7 Eagles and giving up only 4 hits. River Hill exploded for 5 runs in the fifth. Dave Marquart and Ben Trapuzzano started the rally with back-to-back singles, followed by DH Dan Konapelsky's walk. Scott Curtin ran for Dan. Justin Bilohlavek got an RBI on another walk, Jeff Marquart ran for Justin, and then Bryan Bednarczyk drove in two more with a bases loaded single. Wes McCoy capped the scoring with a two-run double.

In the sixth, the Hawks scored 3 more when Dave Marquart picked up his second single and reached second on a wild pitch. Ben Trapuzzano hit a ground ball to short, but all were safe when the throw went unsuccessfully to third to try to get Marquart. Dan Konapelsky drove in two with a triple over the right fielder's head and then scored on a wild pitch.

Ben Trapuzzano came in to pitch in the sixth, with Jeff Marquart going to left field. Ben retired the side in both the sixth and seventh, striking out one and inducing 3 fly outs and 2 ground outs to Steve Cornelius at short.

Tom Phelan pitched 5 good innings for Centennial, getting his first pitch over for a strike most of the time and whiffing 8 Hawks.
