Hawks go cold in 3-1 loss to Glenelg

Cold, windy weather finally got the best of the Hawks as they dropped a 3-1 game to Glenelg. Neither team scored any earned runs in a game characterized on both sides by walks, wild pitches, plus a sprinkling of hit batters and errors. In the first inning, Hawks' starter Mike Anton struck out the first batter, Ryan Barnoski, only to have Barnoski reach first when the third strike bounced off the ground and went in back of the plate. Glenelg's next batter bunted back to the pitcher, but reached first on the hard-to-pick-up ball. Rob LaHayne then blooped a single to left to load the bases. A couple of low pitches that went to the backstop resulted in 2 runs. Anton then fanned the next two batters and got the third out on a ground ball.

Glenelg got their third run in the fourth inning when T.J. Kuczarski led off with a walk, and eventually advanced all the way home on pitches that got loose. Anton pitched 4 innings with 8 strikeouts, which points toward some even better pitching from Mike when the weather warms up.

Steve Cornelius pitched the fifth inning, striking out two. Jeff Marquart moved from left field to pitch in the sixth and seventh innings, with Ben Trapuzzano going from short to left and Curt Gilliam entering the game at short. When Justin Bilohlavek went out of the game with an injured wrist, Nick Madiou came in to do a good job as catcher. Glenelg threatened again in the seventh inning when, with a runner on base, T. J. Kuczarski drove a line drive deep to right center, but it was caught by Brian Heinz.

In the bottom of the seventh, Dan Konapelsky tried to get things going for the Hawks with a hard hit grounder, but it went right at the first baseman. Bryan Bednarczyk drew a walk and Scott Curtin, running for Brian, went to second on a Ken Gilliam single. Both were left stranded on base, though. The other Hawk hits were singles by Heinz and Bednarczyk. Ross Hempel got the win for Glenelg.
